Hey! A post!
A cult landmark on the Klein Karoo, above a small escarpment, below the huge central Grand Karoo
Billy Ward (Charley Boorman’s sidekick) sent me this shot 2 months ago. That’s him on the ground and Charley third from left
It’s dead centre here, in the middle of nowhere
Ronnie called it that because no-one was stopping at his food place. (Edit: I was just told a friend of his changed it). Now it’s just like Daly Waters in the Australian outback, everyone stops, and girls hang their bras from the ceiling. Unlike Daly Waters, not their undies.
Beautiful hills near Oudtshoorn
Why does my duffle look bigger than usual? Because I had to buy a puffy down jacket. It’s cold!
90% of my riding here has been on paved roads. They’re the best paved roads I’ve ridden in 6 years and much better quality than at home. The top speed is 120kph and cops with radar are frequent, maybe a few times a day.
Here’s a thing you’ll never see at home: the big main roads are paved with an extra wide shoulder, marked off with a solid line. Usually they’re about 60% of the width of the main lane. Cars and trucks that are slow moving ride the shoulder, sometimes hanging over into the main lane, to allow faster traffic to pass. And if someone sees you coming from the rear, they pull onto it automatically. This would never ever happen at home. So not only has SA got the best roads, it’s got the most courteous drivers I’ve ever seen too. Incredible.
Much more in a few days. Editing photos and video now.
